OpenRoots and PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0
Incompatible permanently. The philosophies do not overlap.
Inbound
noPolyForm-Noncommercial-1.0.0 material entering an OpenRoots work
PolyForm Noncommercial forbids commercial use entirely. An OpenRoots instrument permits it at every tier, charging above a threshold. Taking the material in would mean granting recipients a commercial right the upstream licensor withheld.
Outbound
noOpenRoots material entering a PolyForm-Noncommercial-1.0.0 project
PolyForm cannot represent the royalty, and its noncommercial limit is stricter than anything OpenRoots imposes.
Mechanism
Where the pairing holds and where it breaks.
A matrix cell tells you the answer. These are the clauses that produce it.
Derivative works
One combined, distributable artifact. Not permissible in either direction.
Composite distribution
Both shipped side by side, not merged.Aggregation only, and the noncommercial limit governs its portion permanently.
Patent position
Express grants and termination triggers.PolyForm includes a limited patent grant scoped to the permitted noncommercial use.
The royalty
Where the Canopy obligation bites.Fundamentally different premises. PolyForm says commercial parties may not use this at all. OpenRoots says commercial parties may use it and the large ones contribute.
Current permanent terms
What holds for as long as the release exists.PolyForm has no conversion date, so it never converges.
