Report a defect in an instrument.

Two routes. Most defects belong on the public record, where one answer serves every reader with the same question. A defect that would create exposure for an adopter before a correction exists goes to the committee directly and is published once the correction is.

Drafting error

A clause that contradicts another clause, a cross-reference pointing at the wrong section, a defined term used before it is defined, a number that disagrees with the same number elsewhere.

One visible answer serves everyone holding the same copy.

Ambiguity

A clause that two competent readers read two different ways. Include both readings and which one you acted on.

Ambiguity found by one reader is ambiguity every reader has.

Compatibility problem

A licence pairing the compatibility analysis gets wrong, or a pairing it does not cover.

The analysis is published so it can be corrected in public.

Exposure-creating defect

A defect that would expose an adopter who is relying on the instrument today. A grant that reads wider than intended, an obligation that fails to attach, a termination that fires when it should not.

Published before a correction exists, this hands a counterparty an argument against an adopter who did nothing wrong.

Trademark misuse

An OpenRoots name or tier name applied to a text that is not the published instrument.

Two artifacts saying ORL-2.2 must carry the same terms. This is the only thing the marks exist to protect.

What happens next

Every report reaches the record.

A report that produces no visible outcome is a report nobody will make twice.

    Acknowledged

    Within the stated window, with a disposition or a date for one.

  2. 02

    Recorded

    The finding appears on the errata register against the affected version, with its severity.

  3. 03

    Answered

    Accepted or declined, with the reasoning. A declined report stays on the record with the reason.

  4. 04

    Corrected

    A typographical or clarifying defect is corrected in the next minor version. A defect that changes what is owed requires a major version.

  5. 05

    Credited

    The reporter is named on the erratum unless they ask not to be.
